Durham Clinic Looted After Gas Explosion Disaster

Looters broke into a Durham health clinic sometime after the downtown gas explosion on April 10th that affected over 20 businesses, injured 25 people, and caused the death of two people. The subsequent theft of clinic property has prompted the clinic to notify patients that their information, including diagnoses and treatment information may have been compromised. The clinic suffered significant damage in the blast, and employees were unable to return to their building until September 9th. That’s when they became aware of the property theft. “Main Street discovered that looters had unlawfully entered the office and stolen two laptop computers, a clinician’s cell phone, and a printer that stored patient information,” the notice on the clinic’s website states. In addition, the immediate forced evacuation of employees left the file room unlocked. Patient names, social security numbers, health information and driver’s license numbers may all be compromised. The notice does state that the stolen items were password protected. The theft was reported to the proper authorities, and the subsequent investigation is ongoing.
