What is SIP Trunking?

Session Initiation Protocol trunks, or SIP trunking, is a VOIP and media streaming service that allows Internet telephony service providers (ITSP) to deliver phone service and unified communications to customers.  To put it simply, a SIP trunk is a connection between an organization and an ITSP.

SIP Trunks allow for services including voice over IP (VOIP), instant messaging, multimedia conferencing, voice calls, video chat, desktop sharing, web conferencing and other internet-based distance services.  Through SIP trunking, these services are easier and cheaper to maintain, operate, design and manage than they are through an IP-PSTN gateway.  These advantages mean that SIP trunks are becoming more available and more communication-based technologies are emerging all the time.  An investment in a SIP trunk can save you money and give you a pretty fast ROI.
