Why Every Small Business Needs a Responsive Website

A responsive website is a web page that is designed to resize itself depending on the type of device it is being viewed on. Gone are the days when a website needed just a mobile version and a desktop version. Consumers now surf the web on everything from big screens to tiny watch-size devices.  With the growth of smartphones, tablets and other mobile computing devices, more people are using smaller-screens to view web pages.  Small businesses need to take advantage of the flexibility that a responsive website can provide.

With a traditional “fixed” website, users face missing elements, distorted elements, inconvenient scrolling, and excessively long load times.  This is particularly true for graphics-heavy sites.  Tiny smartphone screens are even more challenging.  This issues essentially resolve themselves in a responsive website where “fluid grids” allow all page elements to be sized by proportion rather than pixels.

Other issues to look into include selection issues (can items be selected by both mouse click and finger touch?), large graphics (bigger graphics = longer load times), and apps (do you really need one?).  Also look into purchasing a responsive design template.  If you have a WordPress site, for example, you can access a template gallery like ThemeForest and search for “responsive WordPress themes” to get you started.
